Answers to common questions about VUML. If you cannot find what you need here, get in touch and we will help.
Frequently asked questions
Does VUML require Java or an internet connection?
No. VUML renders all diagrams natively using CoreGraphics. There is no Java runtime, no PlantUML JAR, and no server involved. The application works entirely offline.
Which macOS versions are supported?
VUML requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. It runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
What diagram types does VUML support?
VUML renders eight diagram types natively: sequence, class, component, state, activity, use case, ArchiMate, and work breakdown structure (WBS) diagrams.
What is the difference between .puml and .vuml files?
A
.puml file is a plain-text PlantUML document. VUML opens it in a split-pane editor with live preview. A .vuml file is a model document backed by SQLite. It stores elements, relationships, and multiple views in a single package, giving you a persistent architecture model rather than a text file.
Can I import existing PlantUML files?
Yes. Open any
.puml file directly with File > Open or by double-clicking it in Finder. VUML registers as the default handler for .puml, .plantuml, and .pu file extensions.
What export formats are available?
You can export diagrams as PNG (at 1x, 2x, or 3x resolution) or SVG. You can also copy the rendered diagram directly to the clipboard.
How do I enable Vim mode?
Open Preferences (Cmd+,) and toggle Vim Mode on. The PlantUML editor will switch to modal editing with full Vim keybindings. Your current mode is shown in the status bar at the bottom of the editor.
Does VUML collect any data or require an account?
No. VUML does not collect analytics, require an account, phone home, or track usage in any way. See the privacy policy for full details.
Is there a subscription or in-app purchases?
No. VUML is a one-time purchase. All features are included and all future updates are free.
Where are my files stored?
All files are stored wherever you choose to save them on your Mac. VUML uses the standard macOS document model. Nothing is uploaded to any cloud service.

Troubleshooting
My diagram is not rendering
Check that your PlantUML source begins with
@startuml and ends with @enduml. If the diagram still does not render, look for syntax errors highlighted in the editor. VUML supports a subset of PlantUML syntax -- see the diagram types section on the home page for supported types.
The application will not open on my Mac
VUML requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. If you are running an older version of macOS, you will need to update before VUML can launch. If you are on a supported version and the app still will not open, try removing it from Applications and reinstalling from the Mac App Store.
How do I report a bug or request a feature?
Send an email to support@vuml.app with a description of the issue or suggestion. If reporting a bug, include the diagram source text and the macOS version you are running. Screenshots are helpful.
